MARIANO NAVARES

He was born in the industrial spanish town of Miranda de Ebro where he performed studies of metal manufacturing work at its Technical School. This not very common craft can be easily recognized in his sculptural work even more clearly than his later Drawing and Perspective studies at the Applied Arts School of Vitoria. Geometry and perspective must be also appreciated as they opened a “point of flight” in the distance.

In Madrid, drawing already took him towards Indoor Design with some brief dabbling with painting. Work and time gave movement to the figures. Chinese ink. Man. Paper whiteness. From the first drawings, the present ones maintain the figures’ height, the extreme slenderness of arms and legs and the silent questioning gesture. But today, due to the technique and pulsation of the chinese calligraphy, the stroke and the free gesture are at command.

In Palma of Majorca, his second job drove him to Indoor Design and he started making his own prototypes in his studio with forge. In this way, perspective was incarnated in a kind of sculptural –three dimensional– work. SPACE. In 1988 he put design temporarily aside and returned to Miranda to start from the beginning –the studio– rediscovering hand work. By then, drawings turned into paintings, and paintings acquired relief. Sculpture, with its shapes and volumes, emerged from where the artistic and two dimensional work –painting– finished. So, the first murals were born in a wider dimension and thereby the answer of the materials chosen came to light: iron, junk, industrial wastes, or thrown objects. From this particular game with the matter, the embryo of his later works was born. Materials speak about his landscape, which is also an inner landscape. Here, the first figures of iron and pressed car remainders show up.

At this point, he presents several exhibitions of drawings and paintings and in 1991, in Bilbao, he exposed, for the first time, all his relieve and sculpture work developed during these investigative years.

In 1995 he decides to embark in a new project and returns to Majorca to establish his studio, this time in Estellencs. HYPERSPACE. Between the mountains and the sea. With the tools and the matter.
